Notice to start with why Jesus tells this parable. He is responding to the criticism of his opponents that he eats with tax collectors and sinners. The criticism that sets him off on his storytelling is this: “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them” (Luke 15:2).

“All right,” says Jesus, “Let me tell you what kind of a fellow I really am. I’m a fellow like the shepherd who goes and seeks the lost sheep. I’m a fellow like the widow who turns the house inside out looking for the lost coin. I’m a fellow like the father who goes looking after two sons.”
